Special
Event:
Fur
Ball Pampers Pets, Raises Money
Last
year, the guests of honor arrived by all manner of transportation,
including luxury sedans, SUVs, and several specially-equipped
vehicles. They were each assigned a personal assistant, and as
the evening unfolded these unlikely celebrities were treated to
gourmet food, personal massages, and even pedicures while being
honored by various Lansing-area residents.
Of course,
these particular guests ate on the floor. And, some of them tended
to drool and occasionally lick the hand of their escort. But,
that's what dogs do, right?
On May 1st,
2004 the Capital Area Humane Society of Lansing, Michigan held
its first annual Fur Ball at the University Club on the campus
of Michigan State University. This special fundraising event,
which raised $50,000 for the nearly 7,000 animals surrendered
to the shelter each year, drew a sellout crowd of 300 guests and
was also attended by 20 canine companions.

The
most notable four-legged guest was none other than the "First
Dog" of Michigan, Governor Jennifer Granholm's own
labrador-pointer mix. Named Mac (short for Mackinac), this
lovable and inquisitive pooch drew admiring glances and
appreciative pats on the head wherever he went. |

Also
receiving special recognition were Lansing Police Officer
Norm Naimy and his K-9 partner, Oliver. During his ten years
in police work, Oliver served with distinction and compiled
an impressive list of selfless accomplishments. |
To accommodate
Mac and the special volunteers who helped with the other pets,
The Irwin Foundation provided its Mobile Veterinary Facility during
the festivities. This turned out to be a very welcome addition
to the rather soggy evening.
This year,
another night of fun and frolic is planned, and the second annual
Fur Ball will be held on April 30, 2005. Once again, The Irwin
Foundation will be involved—but in a slightly different
way. A special vacation package with the use of our new 2005 Monaco®
Dynasty Motor Coach will be offered as one of the auction items.
The Irwin
Foundation encourages the use of its Fundraising and Mobile Veterinary
Facility, which is made available for various veterinary-related
events and activities. Click here
